(More Than Meets The Eye)




...Melissa Kretschmer's glass, tar and silicone works are, like Valentine's, reliquaries, but hers seem to hermetically seal up real time, and it is as though we could witness the deliquesence of time itself in these containers which are themselves in another way totally porous and in flux. Tactile objects that harbour an unlikely depth, a ground space simultaneously present and absent, these works may be said to reify the temporal. They change dramatically from one viewing to the next. Just when we think we have turned the corner on uncertainty and codified one of Kretschmer's works, it undergoes a metamorphic micro-shift, and our certitude has slipped away. In memory, we are left with the shed flesh of a chameleon....
